Quick answer

U on a Château induction hob means no pan, or a pan that does not suit induction. It clears with a suitable pan.

Model compatibility: La Cornue reuses codes across series and model years, so U may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

U shows when no pan is detected or the pan is unsuitable for induction, and clears when a suitable pan is placed on the zone.

The U on a La Cornue induction hob is a display indicator rather than a breakdown. It appears when there is no pan on the heating zone, or when the pan is not suited to induction. Power cannot be increased while it shows.

Cooktops covered

The Château induction hob module of the current G4 series: Château 90, 120 and 150, plus induction ranges described in the guide.

How U goes away

Place a suitable pan on the zone and the symbol disappears. If a pan is lifted off during cooking, the zone stops and U appears. Put the pan back and cooking resumes at the power level that was set before.

Which pans work

  • Recommended: ferromagnetic pans such as cast iron, steel, enamelled pans, and stainless-steel pans with ferromagnetic bottoms. A small magnet lets you check.
  • Excluded: copper, pure stainless-steel, aluminium, glass, wood, ceramic and stoneware.
  • A pan with too small a diameter will not work. The minimum varies with the size of the heating zone.

After cooking, turn the zone off at its knob instead of leaving pan detection active.

Related codes

  • E: a genuine electronic failure message, unlike U.
  • U400: a code that stays on after a connection problem.
