Gas Appliance Safety What Every Homeowner Should Know

La Cornue manuals give the same instruction: do not light appliances, do not touch electrical switches, and do not use a phone inside the building. Leave, and call the gas supplier from elsewhere, or call the fire department. Do not go back in to turn something off, and do not try to find the source yourself. Installation and service of the gas side belongs to a qualified installer, service agency, or the gas supplier.

A burner knob that was left slightly open is the most ordinary cause, but nobody can tell that from the smell alone. Treat every gas smell the same way until someone qualified says otherwise.

Knowing what the safety hardware does helps in judging what is normal. The Chateau manual says its gas burners have safety thermocouples: if a burner goes out, gas to that burner is cut off automatically. A CornuFe 110 manual describes a Flame Supervision Device on each burner that stops gas flow if the flame goes out. These devices exist because a burner can be blown out by a draft or a boil-over.

They also explain the lighting routine. On the Chateau, you press the knob, turn it to the high-flame position, and hold it for roughly three to ten seconds while the thermocouple heats. The manual says not to hold it more than 15 seconds, and if the burner has not lit, to stop and wait at least one minute before trying again. On the CornuFe 110, the instruction is to hold the knob about four seconds while the igniter sparks, and if the flame goes out when the knob is released, set it to off, wait one minute, and retry holding slightly longer.

Several things look alarming but are described as normal. A sparking noise means the ignition system is working, and pressing one burner knob makes sparks at every burner on the CornuFe 110. Flame cycling on and off in a gas oven is the thermostat regulating. On first use, burners may not light at first because of air in the gas lines, and the manual says to operate each burner in turn until the air clears, which may take one to five minutes.

Flame color matters more. The Chateau manual says natural-gas flames should be bluish with at most a slight yellowish fringe. Propane may look softer with slightly yellowish tips. A long, white-tipped flame is a call-for-service sign. A burner that lights with a puff, or after a noticeable delay, should also be reported instead of tolerated.

For a burner that will not light, one CornuFe 110 troubleshooting list suggests asking whether the power is on, whether the sparker or burner holes are blocked by debris, whether the burner heads are seated correctly, whether the gas supply is fine (try another gas appliance), and whether the burner sparks when the knob is pressed. Chateau cooking tips add that burner caps must be locked in position for the burner to ignite. After cleaning, heads must locate properly in the base and every part must be completely dry before it goes back.

Those are all surface checks. Opening the gas path, adjusting the valve bypass screw, or working on connections is service-agency work; the Chateau manual says its maintenance section is limited to service personnel recommended by the dealer.

The Chateau gas oven lights automatically: the electronics come on through the thermostat, the igniter sparks, the gas valve opens, and the burner lights. A red indicator in the control box flags an ignition defect. The manual says to check that the gas shutoff valve is open and gas is supplied, press the reset button, and wait at least one minute before another attempt. If it persists, contact after-sales or the dealer. One difference matters: a CornuFe 110 manual says cooktop burners can be lit with a match during a power failure, but the Chateau gas oven manual prohibits lighting the oven by match.

Is the clicking sound a sign of a gas leak?

No. The manual describes sparking as the ignition system working normally. A leak is a smell, not a sound.

Can I relight a burner right away if the flame goes out?

The manual says to close the knob and wait at least one minute before relighting, so any gas can clear.

Should I tighten a loose connection myself?

No. Gas fittings are for a qualified installer or service agency. If you suspect a leak, leave and call the gas supplier.

Can I use a match during a power outage?

One CornuFe 110 manual allows it for cooktop burners only, with specific steps. The gas oven manual prohibits it. Check your own manual first.
