Electrical warning signs on cooking appliances: burning smell, sparking, hot plugs, and breakers that will not hold — stop-use guidance.
Cooking appliances carry serious electrical loads. Warning signs include a hot plug or junction, sparking at the back of a range, a burning-plastic smell, breakers that trip when a bake cycle starts, or controls that flicker then die. This is not a guide to washer motors.
Stop using the appliance. Shut off the circuit if you can do so safely. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips on the same function.
Photograph the install and the rating label if it is visible without moving the unit. Do not pull a range to “inspect the cord” unless you already know how to do that without damaging gas connections — and if gas is involved, do not pull it at all.
